How Duke Became Family

Every great story has a beginning, and ours starts with a two year old husky named Duke, a rehoming, and a whole lot of uncertainty.

Duke came into our lives in twenty twenty after his previous owners realized he wasn't the right fit for their family. He was only two years old, young, a little unsure, and carrying the confusion that comes with such a big change.

Duke's First day with us

Here's a confession. I wasn't a dog person before Duke, not even close. But something about him got under my skin almost immediately.

My partner's side of the story is a little different. He's a Coast Guard veteran, and he'd always been a dog person, but that part of his life had been on pause for a while. His PTSD made certain things harder, and the VA actually suggested a dog might help. So one day he simply said he wanted a dog, he wanted a friend. What we didn't expect was how much Duke would bring out a side of him we hadn't seen in a long time. Duke gave him a reason to get outside, a routine, a companion who asked for nothing but love and consistency. In a very real way, Duke helped heal him.

It wasn't instant harmony with any of us though. Duke didn't trust us right away, and we were learning his quirks and his history while trying to earn his confidence.

Slowly, things shifted. Duke learned he was safe with us. We learned his personality, his habits, the way he communicates. Duke isn't just a dog we own, he's family. We healed him, and in more ways than one, he healed us right back.
